Rosemary Hufton

I am a mixed media artist whose work is constructed from recycled, reclaimed, vintage and surplus materials. My connection with these resources is profound and includes rescued and re-purposed fabrics and old plastic bags. These materials are frequently used out of their normal context, but they retain an echo of their normal place or use, giving my work a story beyond the obvious. Parts of deconstructed gadgets, electronic machinery and discarded objects are used, with inspiration often taken directly from their shapes. I like to make sculptural pieces and often laminate plastic bags, recycle wires, and use sea-worn ropes, employing handknitting and basketry techniques. I founded the Grace Barrand Design Centre, a Craft Council recognised gallery, teaching studio, shop, and café, inspired by the talented work from many artist craftsmen working in diverse disciplines. After twelve years of trading, GBDC has now permanently closed its doors.
